>> coming up on kron four news at eleven. the hunt continues tonight in san jose. for the man who stabbed a woman to death in a busy neighborhood. and in san leandro. parents are warned about an attempted child abduction at a grade school. the news is next.

(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> tonight - a man is in surgery after being shot by police in castro valley. police were responding to a call from his family -- saying he'd been threatening others inside the family home. the man then called police himself, saying if they

arrived - he'd shoot. police later found the suspect hiding in a bush in a driveway pointing what police believed was a gun. police shot him - and then discovered it was a home- made replica. they have not released details of the man's condition -- or his identity. parents in san leandro may be holding their children a little tighter tonight. as kron four's philippe djegal reports. police are investigating an attempted child abduction at an elementary school. >> reporter: ten minutes before school let out tuesday afternoon. the san leandro police say a 7-year-old boy. a second grade student here at jefferson elementary school. went to the bathroom. and, on his way out. police say a man grabbed him from behind and put his

hand over the boy's mouth. he was not injured. police say the boy bit the man's hand and ran away. but so did the suspect. lieutenant jeff tudor says at this time. it's unclear if the suspect is a school employee or a stanger. but the victim did get a glance of the man before running away. >> "the suspect is described as a dark complected male, possibly a dark skinned hispanic male, possibly 18 years of age, five foot seven, wearing a white t- shirt, dark jeans and dark tennis shoes." the school did not notify police about the incident until friday morning. but they did notify paretns via automated messages. they're also going to be holding a parent meeting on monday evening to address any concerns or issues they may have. in san leandro, philippe djegal, kron four news. as for why the school didn't report the incident

to police sooner. the school superintendent said in a statement -- quote -- " i cannot confirm that the child told police that a "man" tried to grab him. the student reported to us that he thought it was a teenager." i reiterate that the police are not sure if it was an attempted abduction. or if there is anything suspicious to look into. san jose police are investigating that city's tenth murder this year. they're looking for the man who stabbed a woman in broad daylight. police combed through the neighborhood.trying to find the suspect. this is video of the scene from our helicopter partnership with a-b-c-7 news. kron four's jeff bush explains what happened. about 2:45 police were called to the 900 block of north first street, which is near west heading street. police say that a man attacked a and stabbed

a woman repeatedly in the parking lot of a nearby restaurant. the 29 year old female victim died on scene a short time after the attack. he fled the scene on foot. we belive he jumped a fence east bound into the neighborhood. our metro officers and patrol officers have since searched about a two block area. you can see the large police presence during the search. officers were decked out in full tactical gear and had their guns drawn as they combed the area where the suspect was last seen. what i can tell you about the suspec a very dangerous individualbroad daylight, it's 2:45 in the afternoon. he commits a pretty brutal crime. that is very personal when you are using a knife to stab somebody multiple times there are literally dozens of people nearby, within a stones throw and he is still doing this. police say catching the murderer is very high on the priority list of the department.

>> police are looking for a man who managed to escape from the santa cruz county jail today. jesse parsons was released from custody when he posed as another inmate with a similar name and appearance. staffers did not follow proceedure - and did not confirm his identity before releasing him. parsons was last seen walking towards the san lorenzo river area. he was arrested for several outstanding warrants including trespassing. petty theft. substance abuse. resisting arrest and domestic violence. >> bay area police officers

are helping to look for a missing 12-year-old lake county girl. jenica fredrick was last seen thursday morning around eight a-m at her cobb, california home. police say she never got on the bus or attended school thursday. she may have been upset over a recent incident at her house when she was last seen. investigators got a tip that she might have been heading to the lake port area. there's this island -- and it's got super-cute kangaroos.
